Chapter 16

As everyone started moving toward the exit, Syleth walked over to our table. “All of you, I want to talk to you in my chambers. Go directly there, please.”

We did as Warden Syleth asked, and we met him in his chambers.

“Let me get straight to the point,” Syleth said as soon as we were all in the room. “Fei, what do you know about the ancient underground castles of your goblin ancestors?”

A slight frown came over Fei’s beautiful face. “I know that my people haven’t built such castles for centuries, perhaps even thousands of years, but I do know that they were once popular fortresses for goblin kings of old.”

“Pardon me, but what’s an underground castle, Fei?” Cecil asked.

“Ancient goblin fortresses,” Warden Syleth said, answering this question before Fei could, “that are built deep below the earth instead of above it, like conventional castles are. They were once spread across the area that is now the Wilderlands, and we believe that the range of these ancient structures goes beyond that, even into what is now the Empire.”

“You believe, Warden Syleth?” I asked, raising an eyebrow. “You mean that even with all the vast knowledge contained in the Great Archives, the Jade Bastion isn’t sure where these ancient underground castles are?”

“Yes, Leo, that’s the problem,” Warden Syleth answered with a sigh. “It is true that our repository of knowledge here in the Jade Bastion is immense, and our Great Archives are probably the largest archives in the world, but we do not have knowledge of everything here. The locations of the goblins’ underground castles were a closely guarded secret among the goblins, and as you all know, the history between the goblins and the Jade Bastion has not been particularly warm.”

“I don’t know where any of these ancient underground castles are, Warden,” Fei said, “but I’m sure that there must be some old scrolls or tomes somewhere in Geriarc that map out their locations..”

“We’re sure, based on the descriptions Seeker Blackhand has given us of his surroundings while in captivity, that he was being held prisoner in one of these underground castles,” Syleth said. “It is absolutely imperative that we find the location of this castle—this could very well be where the traitors are holding the Archmage and conducting the ritual to complete the birth of Kraelkor’s spirit into this realm. You must help us to find this place, Fei. Only you can do this.”

“Of course, I’ll do whatever I can to help,” Fei said enthusiastically. “But Geriarc is a long way away.”

“We can all go in the airship with Mizrel,” Vanessa suggested.

“No, that will take too long,” Warden Syleth said. “Fei must either go with Leo or Inquisitor Emberstone. The Fire Meteor spell is the fastest way to cover the great distance between here and Geriarc.”

“I’ll take Fei there, Warden,” I said. “The goblins know me and trust me; indeed, they revere me as the prophesied Dragon Tamer. They’ll be far more likely to give me whatever the Bastion asks for than they would Inquisitor Emberstone, even if he was accompanied by Fei.
